Harry Penn
1921 - 2010



U.S. Veteran Harry Ray Penn, 88, died Wednesday afternoon in the Sabine County Hospital, Hemphill Texas. He was born May 20, 1921, in Maydell Texas. He lived in Hemphill for 35 years, moving from Port Arthur. Mr. Penn retired as a pipefitter from Pipefitters Local 195. He was also a member of the Hemphill VFW, American Legion, Six Mile Baptist Church and Littleton Fowler Lodge #305.

Staff Sergeant Penn served in the Army Air Corps, serving in the 466th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force, during the bombing of Germany and German-occupied France during World War II. During the war he completed 30 missions, including 18 as the tail gunner of a B-24 heavy bomber.

Harry is survived by his wife, Mary Audrey Penn of Six Mile; two sons, Michael Penn and wife Nancy of Parker, Arizona, and Larry Ray Penn and wife JoEllen of Port Arthur; one daughter, Deborah Carter and husband Paul of Charlotte, NC; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Sunday, March 14, 2010, in the Starr Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, March 15, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Yellowpine Cemetery with military honors and masonic graveside rites.
